Ramsgate Heritage & Design Forum is an expert panel of Ramsgate residents.

We aim to promote high standards of architecture and urban design in Ramsgate. We also support the conservation and improvement of the town’s rich heritage, both inside and outside its Conservation Area.

Areas of Activity

The Forum has three main areas of activity:

  1. Conserve Ramsgate’s Heritage

We aim to raise awareness of the importance of conserving and enhancing heritage within the conservation area. We encourage good design in economic regeneration, including new developments proposed in the emerging local and neighbourhood plans.

2. Promote good design

The forum works with and supports both Town and District Councillors and local planners in their efforts to raise the quality of design in both restoration projects and new developments.

3. Respond to planning applications

The forum acts as an intelligent and well informed resource on planning matters and comments on the following:

Planning Applications: The RHDF is a statutory / official consultee for planning applications and listed building consents within Ramsgate‘s conservation areas. Written comments are submitted to the Thanet District Council every month.

Planning Policy: We review and comment on Policy and Strategy documents (eg Local Plan) on their impact on the built environment and heritage of Ramsgate.

Conservation Area: We keep under review the existing boundaries of the town’s Conservation Area and make recommendations to TDC on amendments or new designations. We have assisted with a previous Conservation Area Appraisal.

Heritage at Risk: We advise Thanet District Council & Historic England of cases of neglect concerning buildings of architectural and/or historic interest within the Conservation Area and the wider town. We monitor enforcement action on inappropriate developments.
